Hey, I want to share some thoughts today about something that's been bugging me, but first, let me set the stage for everyone who's willing to read this whole thing.
This patch is loved by many without a doubt, nearly everyone I know cherishes it with nostalgia. But, there's a MASSIVE issue: balance. Back in the day, folks played for fun and picked classes they liked. I'm pretty sure that most on this server have played Aion before, driven by nostalgia, and are experienced players. But here's the catch. The more we learnt, the less balance we witnessed—this patch is galaxies away from being fair. And with everyone knowing how to squeeze those victories for glory points, AP, or rep, the game system starts to fracture. Players switch from playing for fun to playing the most OP class there is (gunner, by the way). The problem? Getting nuked by a gunner in under a second with a juggernaut cannon + spirit cannon, etc., kills your passion for the game, one shot at a time. Let's be real. Gunners are everywhere, and the fact that a vast majority use synapse for turbo macros doesn't help. Yet, I totally get why this patch fits private servers so well. It's balanced regarding P2W elements. You can farm your gear and also speed up things by donating or through Twitch streams, but this isn't about the broken streamer co-ops, just a tad, there's a stat cap that comforts F2P and hard grinders. Some day, you'll hit endgame, sooner or later. No, this isn't a call to change the patch, I adore Katalam, the 4.6, and consider it the ultimate patch, it just needs a little boost. I have a question: have you heard of League Of Legends? (not a sponsor, just an example btw) The most played game ever, and yet, it's basically unchanged over time. The reason? Patch notes, that's it, patch notes!
Leaving a game static and expecting vitality is a fallacy. Instead, aim for perfection, refresh player engagement, and convey that you really care about the community. Don't freak out, I'm not yelling "nerf gunners." I get it. Being destructive is the gunner’s role. But defensive gear isn't much use since gunners barely regard magic suppression. So what can we do?
Make subtle tweaks to skills to indirectly buff or nerf other classes, for instance:
Gladiator defense prep: +3% pvp defense.
Bard shield: +5% pvp defense.
Play around with minor adjustments and see if players vibe with them. If a change is overly impactful, they'll grumble, and you'll know when to rollback.
I understand that this might be challenging, or some might dislike modifications. But remember two things:
1: I'm suggesting very minimal tweaks to make things statistically better, not to like "gladiators can tank everything" or "bards dominating everyone." What I'm after is: "gladiators die 6% less often against gunners" or "bards improve 7% against assassins" (it's just an illustration).
2: Keeping the game unchanged forever is basically signing its death warrant. Being a mirror of the original doesn't make it flawless. Consider that COVID-19 had a significant impact here, but this will soon pass. When player numbers drop, assuming another quarantine will save the day is wishful thinking.
Summary: Embrace change.
and synapse is total trash!
corrected a few errors*
But hey, if the balance and server quality is what matters to you, from my early tests on Aion Riftshade, they're on it. They've got a top-tier server-side anticheat, balance quests & classes through dedicated tweaks, and it's managed by active GMs/devs always present on Discord. Their approach, rolling out in Q1 2026, looks to keep things fresh and fair. Blissfully no need for ExitLag with their outstanding low ping. So yeah, totally worth checking it out.
