Backstory
On her quest to delve deeper into the fabric of space and time, Tiamat chances upon a rift which leads to the strange land known as Bhulrasan. Since a time beyond memory, Bhulrasan – now known as the Dokkaebi Realm – has been the cradle of the mighty fire dragons. Upon arriving there, she met the mysterious scholar by the name of Imoog, who welcomed her to the other side, and introduced himself as a descendant of the mighty fire dragons.
Rather naively, he revealed to her that the following day would see the culmination of a thousand years of training, and his ascent to become a fire dragon with aid of the Cintamani.
Even though this world was totally alien to her, Tiamat immediately understood what the birth of another dragon would mean for her claim to supremacy, so she tainted the Cintamani and withdrew from Bhulrasan.
The anguish caused by this treachery, and the fact that all of his travails to become a real dragon had come to nought, tore Imoog’s asunder, and the failed dragon’s psyche split into two aspects: the virtuous scholar on the one hand, and the wrath-filled shadow Gangcheol on the other. Driven by revenge, Gangcheol opened a rift to Balaurea to track down Tiamat, but she hid herself from him well.
Even Bhulrasan itself was twisted by the torment of the betrayed dragon. Once proudly proclaimed the ‘best place to live’ by its inhabitants, the village of Wraithford is now threatened by Gangcheol’s evil power.
The village’s once pure spring water became tainted by Gangcheol’s spirits, while the verdant green vegetation of the area faded and withered. The luscious forests were sheathed by a blanket of thick fog, which now threatens to swallow up any travellers. Shadows became longer, sinister figures wandered between the houses, driving fear into the residents’ hearts and turning the once vibrant little settlement into a ghost town.
The scholar Imoog tried to work with the village’s guardian spirits to protect Wraithford from Gangcheol and his demons, but the evil creatures became ever stronger...
When Gangcheol pursued Tiamat, great rifts opened up between the dimensions in Laphsaran. Monsters and chilling noises burst forth, and both factions immediately dispatched their scouts to learn more about the portals and the place where they led.
It soon became clear that, for whatever reason, not all Daevas were worthy and therefore not just anyone could enter this strange world. Those Daevas who were able to enter met Imoog. He offered to help them find their footing in the Dokkaebi Realm, if they would in return assist him to defeat Gangcheol and restore peace to the land.
Entering the Dokkaebi Realm
The Dokkaebi Realm can be entered via a total of 3 dimensional rifts in Laphsaran. The exact locations of these can be viewed on your map; simply choose the entrance which is closest to you in Laphsaran.
The Instance
Eerie noises pierce the darkness, and the smell of incense hangs in the air. Did that shadow just move? You and your companions have ventured into Bhulrasan, the Dokkaebi Realm. A winding path opens up before you which leads to the Garam Valley.
It soon becomes clear that you must keep your eyes peeled in this strange land, as much which can help you on your travels lies hidden in the picturesque landscape! One example of this are the stylishly made Dokkaebi Hats which, according to legend, can give the wearer strange powers. And don’t overlook the pots of Red Bean Paste which can prove a useful tool in many of the challenges ahead of you.
Death on a Whisper: The Murmuring Gwisin
Soon you will find the Veiled Holt before you and your companions. A thick fog will descend on your senses, an eerie silence hanging in the air, broken only by otherworldly and ghostly cries. Not even the faintest breeze makes itself present, but hark! What was that rustling?
The Veiled Holt is home to an especially sinister demon – the Murmuring Gwisin. He once delivered the souls of the dead safely to the other side, but one day he succumbed to his greed, transgressing against his responsibilities and becoming subject to the gods’ wrath. Now he lurks, waiting to pounce on any who dare to enter the Veiled Holt.
The legends say he only need call a Daeva’s name three times to rend their soul from their body and devour it. And since he resides in the other world, he remains hidden from mortal eyes. How can anyone hope to deal with such a monster? If only you had a dokkaebi with you! Their gaze is said to be able to see beyond the curtain twixt the living and the dead...
If you and your companions manage to survive your encounter with the Murmuring Gwisin, then you can look forward to Temple Keeper’s or even Aeon Temple Guard’s gear!
Game of Life and Death: Gwangsang
Just beyond the Veiled Holt, you will find the Full Moon Pavilion ahead of you. Two men are playing janggi here, but their board conceals a dark secret:
The inhabitants of Bhulrasan once spoke of an old janggi master who would sit in the deathly silence of night at the Full Moon Pavilion and challenge every passing traveller, trader or lost wanderer to a game. Many sought refuge by the light of his lantern and accepted to play against him, tempted by the promise of riches, or simply shelter for the night. But not one of them ever returned home.
Inspect the janggi board more closely if you believe that you and your companions are strong enough to face the spirit which dwells within. His rage and malevolence also reside in Gangcheol’s heart. You must defeat this spirit if you want to face the strong version of Imoog’s evil mirror image.
If you decide to avenge those who have fallen victim to the spirit, you can not only be satisfied in the knowledge that you have done a good deed, but will also have the chance to loot some powerful new jewellery and materials!
Shattered Beauty: The Mirror Gwisin
After passing Moonprayer Hill, you and your companions will find yourselves at Wraithford itself. Once a picturesque village teeming with life, now the people here are terrified of leaving their homes, and instead cower in fear.
Those adventurers who want to face Gangcheol’s tougher version will need to do two things in the village. Firstly, they should acquire the prized buckwheat jelly. The best chance of getting this is the talk to buckwheat jelly master Sundeok. She will give a portion of this delicious pudding to any Daeva who is wearing an Aeon Temple Guard’s Coat from the associated quests.
The village is also haunted by an evil spirit. A young woman once lived here who was admired by everyone for her beauty. She was presented with a mirror with which to marvel at her own immaculate fairness, but the mirror had a hairline crack. Unable to cope with this blemish to her perfection, she started to believe that she herself was also disfigured. In order to see her true face once more, she headed to the well by moonlight, but in her attempt to catch a glimpse of her countenance mirrored in the water’s surface, she lost her grip, plunged into the water and drowned.
The young woman’s mirror is still in the village, just keep your eyes open and you will find it. If you use it by the well to reflect the moonlight into the water, the terrifying Mirror Gwisin will appear from the well and attack you. She has the ability to protect herself from harm, so remember to bring food with you which has previously proven useful in neutralising the abilities of evil spirits.
The Mirror Gwisin is linked to the pride in Gangcheol’s heart and must be defeated in order to confront him in his true form. You can likewise obtain powerful new jewellery and materials from her.
Safety and Suffering: Totems and the Censer
Once you leave the village, you’ll reach Wraithford Fork where you will find a number of ornately decorated totem poles. These are inhabited by the village’s protective spirits, but they are under attack by monsters intent on their destruction! You cannot allow this to happen. Help to defend the totem poles and keep an eye out for Imoog who wishes to root out this evil. In a nearby cave he has discovered a large censer which is summoning the monsters.
This cursed artefact was once gifted to a mourning man who had lost his beloved wife. But instead of returning her to him as was promised, it brought forth evil spirits who killed the poor grieving man. Help Imoog to lift the curse, while ensuring at the same time that the totem poles are not too badly damaged. If they are still largely intact once the dust of battle has settled, then you and your friends will receive the Water Pearl that you will need in your next challenge.
Love Lost: The Water Gwisin
Down by the Yeoul River you will be able to hear the sobbing from afar. These sobs come from the spirit of a sadly heartbroken girl who threw herself into the stream one night and drowned: the Water Gwisin. She knows the gnawing doubt in Gangcheol’s heart only too well, and must be defeated if you are to face him at his greatest strength.
But she dwells in the deep waters which will damage you and your companions if you enter them. This effect can, however, be moderated using the Water Pearl. If you defeat the Water Gwisin, you can acquire a large amount of powerful gear, including weapons and armour!
The Fallen Guardian: Haettoda
On the far side of the bridge, you will soon discover that your path is blocked by an impenetrable wall of fire that prevents any further progress! Instead, climb the ancient stone steps and enter the large temple on the mountain’s peak. The terrifying Haettoda is waiting for you there! Once the loyal guardian of the temple where so many fire dragons once trained, his desperate attempts to protect the temple from Gangcheol’s destructive will led him to come into contact with the dark forces which poisoned and corrupted him. Grant this faithful spirit a worthy end, and you can pick up Temple Keeper’s or Aeon Temple Guardian’s gear. Furthermore, the path to the cave will be unblocked!
The Final Masterpiece: The Roof Tile Gwisin
Near to the cave entrance you will discover a Humble Ancestors’ Table. If you’re carrying any buckwheat jelly, offer it up on the table. This will summon up the Roof Tile Gwisin, who will appear and attack you! This masterful piece of craftsmanship was once created by a talented artisan as a gift for the fire dragon. The people directed their prayers into this richly ornate tile, causing it to gain increasingly more lifeforce. But this erstwhile good spirit was also corrupted by Tiamat’s dark powers, yet he still remembers his predilection for buckwheat jelly. Adventurers who defeat him may find a Godstone or other powerful equipment amongst the shattered remains. His greed is entwined with Gangcheol’s evil, and he must be vanquished if Gangcheol is to be truly defeated.
Imoog’s Dark Side: Gangcheol
Finally, your quest on this journey through the Dokkaebi Realm lies before you and your companions: the Hanbul Cave. Imoog is already waiting for you there. Talk to him and decide who you wish to face. If you want to face Enraged Gangcheol, then you must have confronted and defeated at least three of the aforementioned four evil spirits which are linked to him.
If you manage to defeat Gangcheol, you can get Temple Keeper’s and Aeon Temple Guardian’s gear, Unknown Major or Greater Dokkaebi Realm Painting Fragments and more! Those who defeat the Enraged Gangcheol can also look forward to Burning Subterranean weapons, Noble Fire Dragon King’s weapons, Immortal weapons, Solitude weapons, the exclusive Noble Fire Dragon King’s Wings and more!
Tips and Tricks
Red Bean Paste is more than just a delicious condiment, it is also imbued with incredible power! It can make that which is invisible permanently visible, remove the protective spells of evil spirits, and protect you from evil forces. You and your companions should attempt to collect as much of it as you can. You should also try to find and defeat the Murmuring Gwisin as quickly as possible. It is sufficient for one of your party to activate the Dokkaebi Hat; you needn’t all be carrying one. If the Murmuring Gwisin calls out a Daeva’s name three times, they will die! You should hence endeavour to defeat the Murmuring Gwisin as quickly as Daevanionly possibly.
The Humble Ancestors’ Table where you need to offer up the buckwheat jelly to tempt out the Roof Tile Gwisin isn’t always located in the same place. Imoog won’t send you into battle against his evil mirror image unprepared. If you’re wearing certain cosmetic items which are linked to Bhulrasan, he’ll support you with magical abilities which reset cooldowns or refill your Divine Power. Before the battle begins, remember that you cannot enter the cave from outside while you are facing a version of Gangcheol! Gangcheol’s dark powers will also prevent any kind of spell which can resurrect the fallen within the Hanbul Cave.
It is not necessary to kill every optional opponent to face the stronger version of Gangcheol, but you must have defeated at least three of the following evil spirits: Gwangsang, Mirror Gwisin, Water Gwisin or the Roof Tile Gwisin.
In the temple you can find scrolls detailing the legends of the various spirits to learn more about them.
