Aion Riftshade

Hey everyone :D!

I have returned to the game with a new PC, thinking it would save my gameplay, but alas, I am looking for some help regarding technical side of things in sieges.

Problem:

Game locks up during sieges with a lot of people (Reshanta but I had the same issue in 6.x and 7.x sieges). FPS Drops to 5-10 at gates (with hiding other characters) and then when more people arrive (f.e. other faction) it drops to 1 frame per 10-20 seconds and it just is not responsive. Sometimes it slowly flickers black or I spamclick and then the window gets that "bright" overlay which is like a trademark of any programs not responding on windows 10. And it only 'fixes' itself after the people either leave my now-dead body or just leave the area.

Extra info:

I had the same issue on my old PC and that's why I quit the game, now I'm back with mostly new parts (still waiting for new nvme m.2 and nvidia rtx 3080 to be in stock)

Note that all this happens while my CPU is at a few % of usage, with 4 cores at a pretty high usage (I assume the game makes use of 4 cores). GPU also shows at 5% usage during these freezes (but high before the freezes). My cpu doesn't have an integrated GPU so, it's selecting the correct one.

FPS in areas with no people: 80-120

FPS in ingisson/gelkmaros main base (busy): 40-50

FPS in ingisson/gelkmaros main base hiding other characters (busy): 60-70

FPS in sieges while gathering (before gates): 30-45

Latest drivers, latest updates, fresh windows install, fresh game install (tried through steam and through their own launcher)

I have moved to a different country, so entirely new ISP, and the problem continues

Playing on max high/default engine or lowest high/default engine makes almost no difference. Still locks up

Specs:

Windows 10

64GB ddr4 3600mhz (18cl)

amd ryzen 9 5950x (stock)

asus rog crosshair VIII hero (wi-fi) (x570)

Nvidia geforce GTX 970 (msi)

1TB SSD Samsung 860 EVO

Still waiting for new nvme drive and GPU but, my current gpu only shows below 5% usage during the freezes instead of 100% to fix it anyway xD so I don't know...

If someone had the same issues or know what's wrong, I appreciate some help I don't mind having low FPS at sieges, but I can't stand these freezes where I'm not able to move for minutes. And since 100s of other players can just keep on playing, it's not just because of the game being old.

Aion only uses one core, so you Need a PC with a high Single core Performance, usually old ones work good for this game. Even with the Most up to date parts you will have lags and freezes during siege because Aion is so old (enginewise).

How good is your internet connection ? (could you do a speed test and link the result ? - just download, upload and ping, don't link your ISP or IP^^)

What has internet has to do with anything?Don't tell me u will give an explanation like the technician from gameforge did back in the days when we were waiting for Sarpan patch....It has NOTHING to do with connection...during siege lag.

Well, not in every case, but it can have EVERYTHING to do with internet connection.

Do you know how much information you download when you met someone from the other faction ? Probably not.

Back in the old days, you knew there was an assassin in hide only because you had a lag at that moment. And why did you have this lag ? Because your client downloaded EVERY information about that player. Gear info, atk & def info, skin info, appearence info, etc etc. The list is VERY LONG.

When AiDPSmeter was stopped for a time, a friend of mine started to code her own dpsmeter (but Livo was faster releasing his own. I'm pretty sure he used "le coup du coréen" :D). What she discovered was, when you met a player, the "file" you download was way bigger than we thought, and the more players at the same time we met for the first time, the more info you have to download.

And when is the moment you met for the first time AND at the same time the bigger number of enemies ? Bullseye, SIEGE !

So yes, it has EVERYTHING to do with internet connection if everything else about his computer is good.

So that is the point of my question

If he has a good internet connection, then search why elsewhere.

But if he has a not so good connection, that is a probable solution.

No. Client may download this stuff but its prolly a simple string. The problem here is the game client loading the stuff from the files.

My bad, my explanation was not very complete.

What I meant is, yes there is a problem while loading chars and all, but with his config, that problem should largely be compensated.

However, there is more than "a prolly single string", and while it is not a problem at all for most people with normal connection (you lag when you met the adverse faction in siege, but you can still play), people with a very low connection can have problem loading all of this.

I don't exactly know how the reading of the data is done by Aion (spoiler: not how it should), but people with bad internet connection (stable but low debit) have a history of having more problem during siege than people with same PC config but a way better connection.

If it is not his connection, then see what his graphics parameters for Aion are.

Hey thank you for your time to read and trying to help me!

I have 8ping, 205.58 download (mbps) and 51.66 upload (mbps) to the closest connection in my area.

I have 20 ping, 206 downloads, 51 upload to a connection in Karlsruhe

But it's not with my connection, since the time I have these issues, I have moved to a different country and the problem continues.

I also discovered a new issue which i didn't have before, after a while of being ingame, the game starts lagging immensely when I move my cursor and gpu usage goes to 0%, and goes back to 100+ fps when I stop moving the mouse. Rightclick and dragging the mouse to turn camera doesn't make it freeze. Lowering the mouse polling rate helps a little bit but it still lags.

I think there must be an issue with the SSD. When my new drive arrives I'll do a clean install of everything instead of cloning and hope the issue is resolved.

Ryzen 5950x has some of the best single core performance out there if I'm not mistaken. I had an old cpu (i7 2600K at 4.2ghz) before this one but the problem is identical

What version of your nvidia driver do you have ?

if you have that one, try installing the previous one (457.51) (had the problem recently, support told me to go back to the previous version for that particular problem) https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/drivers/results/167225/

And since it clearly doesn't come from your connection, what are your graphic settings for Aion ?

Try this for siege, maybe it will help (and go back to your normal settings afterwards)

+ hide titles and legion name

yeah I have 460.89, I'll try the previous, but this problem is for a few years already, back then they were older drivers. As for settings, playing on lowest or highest makes no difference, still freezes when enemy faction arrives
